Single Malt: 5 Steps To The Perfect Tasting

whiksy

The genuine fun of having a drink lies in uncovering its compositions. And, a tasting is truly a remarkable way to reach this goal. The spectacular flavors of whiskey, such as single malt, are a thing of beauty that is worth having its own tasting. And, here we give you five steps to ensure you make the best of this tasting experience.

Choose Your Whiskeys

Typically, whiskey tastings start with choosing a specific type or multiple whiskeys to explore. Here we will specifically use single malt whiskeys only for the process.

You can use some grouping options like choosing varieties from different distilleries in the same region or exploring single malts from various areas across the globe. Decide upon the total budget and what whiskeys you want to try – completely new ones or a mixture of new and old drinks.

Choose Your Accessories

The accessories make a difference during the tasting. The Copita or Glencairn glasses are a constant for tastings. They decode complex layers and flavors of flavorful drinks such as your single malts or alize. Keep enough glasses to avoid refilling the same as it could interfere with the palette.

Tasting notebooks and a whiskey handbook can go a long way toward elevating the experience. You can note down your observations and compare them with the handbook to know you drink better.

The Tasting

The five steps in the whiskey tasting involve analyzing the critical parameters of the drink at hand.

Step 1: The Color

Start by analyzing a few visual parameters of the whiskey. Take a quick look at the label of the whiskey –  understand its origin region, alcohol level, age, and other parameters. In the case of single malt, the whiskey comes from a single distillery. So you might learn more about their process and types of barrels used.

Now move on to examine the color of the drink. In fact, the gorgeous color of single malts is one of its most appreciated attributes. The attribute is generally influenced by the aging process that typically occurs in the barrel. The hues of glorious amber or darker colors of malt whiskey come from the type of barrel and time of maturation.

Younger whiskeys exhibit a subtle tone after undergoing a few years of maturing, whereas dark red whiskey may come from sherry barrels after a long maturation period. Keep in mind that the addition of caramel also induces color. So check the label to see if any colorants are present before deriving conclusions from the shade.

Step 2: The Body

Swirl the drink slowly inside the glass such that it coats the sides. Now examine the flow of the drink or how the legs run down the cup. Thin or malts with finer density tend to express a runny leg, whereas heavier drinks take a while to roll down the sides. The flow typically reflects on the alcohol concentration of the drink, with heavier varieties containing more alcohol.

Step 3: The Color

The three aspects that factor in a single malt tasting are the aroma, palate, and finish. Every step from here needs to be slow and gentle to embrace the delicate tones of the drink.

Experiencing the aromatic palate of the whiskey is the most critical stage of any tasting. Slowly swirl the drink around your glass to let it breathe. Now place your nose close to the neck of the glass and smell. Note down the different hints you identify. You do not have to co-relate the flavors to any specific ingredient. Instead, describe it as sweet, citrusy, smoky, or woody or take examples of specific environments that you are reminded of from the smell, for example, a campfire.

If you have several bottles lined up, cleansing your palate is crucial to observe the malt properly. You can either smell water or your skin to cleanse the palette before moving on to the next glass.

Step 4: The Palate

Finally, it is time to taste your sacred single malt. Begin with a small sip, and do not rinse your mouth with it as you would do with low-alcohol drinks. Explore the whiskey flavors slowly and try to understand if they go with your observations from the aroma. You might come across new flavors during the tasting as well. So note them down.

Apart from the flavors, the whiskey’s body or palate also requires attention. Experience the drink and check if it is soft or hard to drink. Moreover, check whether it induces a fresh or a relatively dry effect while in your mouth.

Tip: Remember to take a sip of water to neutralize the effects of alcohol and the palate before moving on to the next glass.

Step 5: The Finish

What the whiskey leaves behind and how long these flavors linger determines the finish of the single malt. After sipping the whiskey, breathe in through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Now examine which flavors remain on your palate and what final tones of flavors you noticed in your mouth. Once you write these observations down, you are now ready to move on to your next glass.

Conclusion

Single malts are an exceptional drink to enjoy. Spend time tasting this excellent drink perfectly, using these steps to relish its unparalleled flavors. Remember, tastings are fun with larger groups. You can share your experience and information and enjoy your time together. So pick some nice friends (should be easy ;)) who share the same excitement of single malts as you and taste away!
