The healthcare system in India evolved massively post the covid-19 pandemic. Facing some never seen before logistical challenges, the government rolled out an app for the better management and tracking of the vaccination drive. Considering India’s huge population, the vaccination drive was facing unprecedented problems such as how to vaccinate so many people, how to make sure everyone gets access to the vaccine, registering for the vaccine, and then subsequently providing vaccination documents.Â
To address all these issues, the central government rolled out the cowin application that was specifically designed for the purpose of seamlessly carrying out the vaccination drive and managing its data. The ministry of health and family welfare along with the ministry of electronics and information technology were responsible for this initiative.Â
Objectives of COWIN
The purpose and objective of launching the cowin app was to provide the benefit of registration: self-registration, individual registration (with the assistance of an official to help submit data), and bulk upload. It comes with different modules to cater to different sections of the user group. The user administrator module, the beneficiary registration module, the vaccination and beneficiary acknowledgment module, and the status update module are all a part of it and can be chosen depending on the use case. The programme assists in the process of defining target groups, maintaining a record of people to whom the dosages are to be provided, and avoiding malpractices.Â
The main objective was to simplify the process of vaccination and enable people to take charge of their vaccination status via the cowin app by making it accessible to the citizens as well as the healthcare providers, frontline workers, and administrative staff. In addition, after all of the doses have been administered, a vaccination certificate that is based on a QR code is provided, and individuals will be able to save it in their mobile phones or laptops by simply choosing the ‘covid certificate download’ option.Â
What does the COWIN app do?
The government of India created the online platform known as COWIN with the intention of ensuring that the covid-19 vaccination is available to everyone in the country. People are able to register themselves and book their desired time slot to take the vaccination using the COWIN online platform, which is connected with the Aarogya Setu app and the Umang app. A few simple steps are all that is required to get started with the Cowin site or app and registering for the vaccine:
- Visit the website www.cowin.gov.in and look for the register button. By giving the data of your Aadhar card, an OTP will be created for you. This OTP will allow you to login and establish a profile for yourself.
- You also have the option to register on the COWIN portal by downloading the aarogya setu app, creating a profile for yourself, and registering.
- In the event that you are unable to register for the vaccine online, you are free to visit any vaccination facility in order to book an appointment. There is no cost associated with any of the registration options. You are required to travel to the vaccination clinic and get the first dose of the vaccine once you have first registered online and booked a time slot to get the vaccine.Â
- The exact same steps need to be taken again in order to administer the second immunization dosage.Â
- After you have finished both doses of the vaccine, you will be given a certificate of vaccination that details the beneficiary reference ID, the name of the vaccine, the date both doses were administered, and the location of the vaccination facility. Scan the Quick Response (QR) code located at the bottom of the vaccination certificate in order to check the cowin certificate.
Benefits of using the COWIN app
There are various benefits of using the COWIN app:
- It provides easy solutions to complicated processes such as registering for the vaccine, delivering the vaccine, managing documents, and patient data, and unifying several healthcare platforms.Â
- It is easy to use and is completely free of charge.
- A person can keep track of their vaccination status and does not have to move out of their home to do so.Â
- It provides and saves vaccination certificates that are extremely necessary to have. The government of India issues the COWIN vaccination certificate as evidence of immunization. This certificate is issued upon completion of both vaccination doses and may be read on the COWIN site as well as the aarogya setu and umang applications. This certificate includes personal information such as names, dates, immunization information, and a QR code that may be scanned and used to validate the cowin vaccine certificate.
