Taking good care of your leather jacket is a very important task to do if you want to use it for a lifetime. Your jacket’s material will remain supple and in shape if you maintain it after some time regularly.
Leather Jackets can be stored in a closet or inside a storage container for a long time when you make sure that during the storage of this piece of the outfit there is nothing bad happened to it. To save your leather jacket from unwanted destruction you have to clean it well regularly. But many of our men and women never know how to clean them properly before storing them.
How to Clean?
To clean your leather jacket before storing you will need a few pieces of equipment which are a piece of cloth, a tub of water, a leather conditioner, and a wood hanger. First, you have to take a piece of cloth then dip it in cold water and start rubbing it on the surface of the jacket in a circular motion make sure you do not use too much water because it can destroy your leather jacket.
Make sure you never wash your jacket in a washing machine because it leads you to the destruction of your jacket due to a high amount of moisture which is very bad for the jacket
Remove Minor Stains:
To remove small stains from the jacket you have to take a piece of clean cloth and a tub of lukewarm water. You have to follow the spot cleaning method to remove those tiny stains from the jacket. Now the question arises what is the spot cleaning method?
The spot cleaning method is the method to remove stains from the jacket by using just a damp cloth with a little amount of dishwashing soap or saddle soap (which is specifically used for leather apparel) and then start rubbing it on the stain until the stain is gone.
Once the stain is gone then wipe the leather with a clean piece of cloth and let it dry for some time make sure you didn’t use too much amount of soap on it because it can destroy the jacket.
Apply Conditioner on Surface of Jacket:
Then you have to apply some leather conditioner on the surface of the jacket which helps your jacket to maintain its shape and quality and prevent it from cracking and tearing. drop a small amount of conditioner on a piece of cotton and then rub it gently until completely dissolved.
Make sure you didn’t apply too much conditioner because it can also destroy the jacket. A good practice is to apply this conditioner regularly after 2 to 3 months when you want to store the jacket for a very long time and wipe any excess conditioner with a dry piece of cloth.
Contact With Specialist:
If you found big stains on the surface of the jacket or the jacket makes a bad odour the best practice is to make a contact with a specialist in the leather garments and not try to clean them at home by yourself. A leather professional will clean your jacket more efficiently and there is no danger to the jacket.
Stains mainly occur when something spills on our jacket and you didn’t treat it well o time they oxidized and become nearly impossible to remove. So, it is very important to clean it entirely before you store it for a long time.
Keep It Dry:
If your leather jacket gets wet by accident or you wear it on a rainy day or someone spills water on it then let it dry naturally for time don’t use any dryer or never place it in direct sunlight because the leather jacket may dry out quicker in sunlight and the whole moisture of jacket will disappear. So, when your jacket gets wet hang it on a hanger at room temperature and let it dry naturally.
Hang it Correctly:
Hanging your leather jacket on a hanger is a good practice to save your jacket from cracking and folding marks but make sure the hanger that you use is completely made of wood because the other hangers may destroy the interior of the jacket. Make sure you never store your jacket after folding them for a long time it may cause creases and crack on it which destroy the look of the jacket.
Don’t Clean At Home:
Never try to clean your jacket if you are not aware of it and never try it before ever in your life. If you try to clean it at home you can lead it to an irreparable state and then even a professional will not help you in restoring your jacket.
Some leather jacket manufacturers allow you to clean your jacket in a washing machine on the label of the jacket but any little misstep can also lead you to serious damage to the jacket.
So, always concern with the professionals to get clean your jacket ideally and then you can store your jacket for a long time or as much as you want to store it.
